Andrew Sands

Name: Andrew Sands

Rank: Senior Constable

What area do you work in? State Highway Patrol Solo Unit (Motorcycle Unit).

What does your job involve? On and off-road State-wide traffic enforcement patrols, searches for missing people on trail bikes, VIP escorts (eg Hilary Clinton), security escorts (eg money from reserve bank), attendance at special events (eg Great Victorian Bike Ride).

When did you join Victoria Police? I joined Victoria Police in 2000.

Why did you want to become a police member?  I always had a passion for cars and motorbikes and wanted to incorporate my skills and knowledge into a police job to catch offenders.

What type of training have you done? Both on and off-road motorcycle courses, pursuit advanced driving course, vehicle safety testing school, advanced traffic law, radar and laser courses, four wheel drive course, first aid courses and a breath test operators course.

Do you enjoy being a police member? Why? Yes I enjoy being a police member in the Solo Unit as it is challenging. Every day there is something new to learn or do. Our unit has variety and scope as we are required to perform varying duties state-wide.

What is the most exciting thing about your job? The high-profile VIP escorts as they are extremely high pressure and require 110% concentration when facilitating VIP movements from one point to another.

What advice would you give to kids who would like to become police when they grow up? It is a very challenging and rewarding career to work towards. Ensure you keep active, healthy, and study hard at school and you will achieve what ever you want to within the police organisation.
