Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after Captain Cook’s cottage and statue was damaged in Melbourne this morning.

It is believed two offenders attended the cottage in Fitzroy Gardens and spray painted the hut about 2am.

The cottage has been defaced with what appears to be various anti-Cook comments.

The Captain Cook statue, which also stands in the gardens, has been damaged by what appears to be an attempt to remove the head.

Police were alerted to the criminal damage by security patrols.

Detectives have secured nearby CCTV in an attempt to identify those involved.

Anyone with information or dashcam vision is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or log onto www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
