A 23-year-old man has had his car impounded after he was allegedly caught speeding in Tullamarine on Christmas Eve.

Fawkner Highway Patrol officers were patrolling as part of Operation Roadwise when they detected a Holden Commodore sedan travelling on the Western Ring Road about 11:15pm.

Police will allege the Commodore was travelling at 193km/h in a 100 km/h zone towards Melbourne Airport.

Officers intercepted the vehicle on Airport Drive and spoke to the probationary licenced driver.

The Commodore was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1014.90 and the driver is expected to be charged with exceeding speed by over 45km/h and driving at a speed dangerous.
