Transcript: Get to know Victoria Police - Major Collision Investigation Unit (MCIU)

[Luke Miller, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant]: The Major Collision Investigation Unit is a unit that responds state-wide seven days a week, 24 hours a day, to motor vehicle collisions that result in the fatality of three or more people, or that results in a life-threatening injury or a fatality where there's evidence to suggest that there's some sort of criminal negligence involved by surviving driver.

Where there's a hit run collision, where someone's fatally injured or life-threatening injuries, or it involves a Victoria Police member, whether on or off duty, or as a result of a Victoria Police pursuit.

[Hannah Smith, Detective Leading Senior Constable]: Obviously, we spend a lot of time out in the field at scenes, but there is a lot of work behind the scenes making sure that our evidence is perfect so that we put forward our best effort at court and our best evidence at court for our deceased person and for their family.

[Luke Miller, Detective Acting Senior Sergeant]: For me, the most rewarding part of the job is actually establishing what's happened and following the evidence, and that could mean a number of things.

It could mean that someone's actually charged, brought to justice.

But it could also mean exonerating someone if they had done nothing wrong. So that for me, it's all about following the evidence and wherever the evidence leads, that's the most rewarding part for me.

[Hannah Smith, Detective Leading Senior Constable]: I think investigating the death of a person is a great honour.

We spend so much time with their family after they're gone.

And yeah, I just find that very, very rewarding to be a part of and I'm very honoured to be part of MCIU.
