Working with people and helping people is something I really enjoy. And policing gives me that opportunity.
Every day is different. We could be out doing a response shift, on one day. The next day we may be re-tasked due to an emergency.
We might help out other units so we could go and do a highway patrol shift. It's a great way to help people. And, I really enjoy it.
I'm a Senior Constable based at the Wangaratta Police Station in the Proactive Policing Unit. So I've been in the job for four and a half years. And in that time, I've worked in the metro area but mostly in the country areas. My current role is a Youth Resource Officer, and I still work in the general duties when required, just as backup.
So the job that I do now is amazing. I go to different schools, I work with a lot of youth and help with early intervention strategies. When youth need a bit more support, I work with agencies and schools to provide that level of support.
Some days I see when I explain something to them, I can see them processing what I've just said, and it's really, really rewarding. And they’re the days that I go home and think, I actually got paid to go to work and do that today, and it just didn't feel like work.
I joined Victoria Police, later in my life. I worked at Centrelink and Medicare for about ten years and in Employment Services as well. I really enjoy working with people and helping people. So policing for me, especially in regional areas, gives me the opportunity to be able to engage with the community and be a part of many different communities as well.
I play netball and basketball and also coach a junior netball side. I will see a lot of youth that I see at schools. So it's really great when you go out and about and they recognise you and can have a chat and that relationship building is there. In regional policing, it's a closer community.
Communications are really important. And in the case of emergencies, we often head office here at Wangaratta, where we have our emergency planning. we rely on, working with many different partners.
So SES, fire (CFA), Ambulance, game management as well. I guess the main things that I like about my job is it is a different job every day, and some days are really long and you go home and you're exhausted.
And some days are just the best days where I might go home and think, it was so much fun.
