Victoria Police speaking with community members

Community partners and reference groups

Learn about how Victoria Police works with the local community to reduce the impact of crime.

Victoria Police seeks to reduce the incidence and impact of crime by building links with:

  • the local community
  • schools and young people
  • multicultural communities
  • local business and traders
  • local groups and support agencies.

Community partnerships

Victoria Police understands the importance of community partnerships in reducing crime and in providing a safer place to live.

Partnerships are achieved through community-based crime prevention programs such as Neighbourhood Watch, Crime Stoppers Victoria and Blue Light Victoria, and a network of full-time crime prevention officers.

Crime Prevention Officers

Each police division has its own Crime Prevention Officer (CPO). The CPO acts as a liaison officer to individuals and community groups. They provide advice and suggest remedies to local community safety problems including:

  • consultation with local communities
  • analysis of crime trends and statistics
  • problem-solving approach to crime reduction
  • thorough knowledge of available options and strategies and their appropriate implementation
  • relationship management with key crime prevention partners.
