Delivery and mail security

How to protect your mail and parcels from theft, and what to do if your mail is stolen.

Packages and letters are common targets for thieves. They may try to take your items, or find out personal information from your mail.

There are simple steps you can take to help keep your mail secure.

Key crime prevention tips

To prevent theft of your mail, you should:

  • secure your letterbox
  • leave instructions for your deliveries
  • divert your mail.

Theft prevention information

Follow these crime prevention tips to prevent mail theft.

Secure your letterbox

To keep your mailbox secure:

  • choose a design that does not allow access from the front or back
  • use a good quality lock on the access point
  • add more security:
    • install your letterbox in a secure area of your property or building
    • ensure there is CCTV camera coverage.

Leave instructions for your deliveries

Leave instructions for the delivery service to help them deliver your parcel safely. You can let the delivery service know:

  • where to send the delivery if you’re not home, or
  • a safe, secure place to leave the delivery that is not easily visible.

Divert your mail

Minimise the amount of mail delivered to your home by:

  • Not having bank or utility documents sent by post. Instead, have them sent by email.
  • Sending parcels to an Australia Post parcel locker, PO Box or Private Bag, or other collection point. Learn more about delivery options on the Australia Post website.
  • Having online shopping delivered to your work, or to a trusted friend or family member.
  • Arranging to collect new credit or debit cards from your bank or post office.

Other ways to keep your mail safe

Other steps you can take to protect your mail and parcels include:

  • scheduling deliveries for when you know you’ll be home
  • asking for parcel tracking
  • paying for parcel insurance, if you are ordering something of value
  • having someone you trust collect your mail if you’re away for an extended period.

What to do if your mail has been stolen

If you notice mail missing, contact the person or business who sent it directly.
