Online shopping scammers will often set up fake profiles or websites. They will offer deals that are too good to be true and post fake ads or reviews.
They might pretend they are:
- a genuine buyer
- a business that you know and trust
- a legitimate business by using stolen logos and Australian Business Numbers (ABNs).
Online shopping scams will often request an unusual payment method, such as:
- money order
- pre-loaded money card
- Bitcoin, or
- wire transfer.

You can lower the risk of being scammed when you are buying or selling online.
If you think you've been scammed while shopping online
If you think you have been involved in an online shopping scam, act fast to minimise the damage.
- Contact your bank or financial institution as soon as possible to report the scam. Ask to dispute the transaction and block any further payments.
- Change your passwords for online banking, emails and shopping on all devices.
- Get support from IDCARE - a national identity and cyber support service.
