An unsecured mobile device can lead you to lose your:
- passwords
- bank details
- access to your social media accounts
- personal photos, videos and files
- private information.
Advice to protect your mobile device
There are steps you can take to keep your device and your personal information safe.
Secure your device
Make sure your device is physically safe at all times.
- Use a password, PIN, fingerprint or Face ID to secure your device. Ensure your device is set to lock automatically.
- Do not unlock your phone or device where others can see you enter the password or PIN.
- Keep your device secured in a pocket or bag.
- Don't write your passwords down.
- Install anti-loss apps such as ‘Find My Phone’ or ‘Find My Device’.
- Keep operating systems and apps up-to-date.
Think before you click
Don't risk losing your personal data when using your device.
- Only install applications (apps) from the official application store on your device.
- Only use reputable websites. User reviews can help confirm their legitimacy.
- Never click on hyperlinks in text messages, social media messages or emails from people you don’t know.
- Never click ‘pop up’ advertisements or links.
Keep your data safe
Look after the personal information stored on your devices.
- Don't access personal information while using public WiFi (such as logging into your bank account). This includes at cafes, airports and public libraries.
- Avoid storing personal information such as banking details and social media passwords on your device.
- Ensure you delete all personal data from your device before selling or recycling it.
- Back up your data regularly with a backup application, or manually sync your device with a computer.
If your mobile device is lost or stolen
If you lose your mobile device or it gets stolen:
- contact your service provider to stop or pause your service
- notify your bank if you notice any unusual transactions.
Report a lost mobile phone or device
You can report a lost or stolen mobile phone or device to Victoria Police. You can do so by:
- calling the Police Assistance Line on 131 444
- submitting an online report
- visiting your local police station.
If you have tracking software installed on your device, let us know. Apps such as ‘Find My Phone’ or ‘Find My Device’ can often help find a mobile device that has been lost or stolen.
When reporting, you will need to let us know your missing device model and serial number.
