Report a change or suppression (conversion) practice

Harmful practices that seek to change or suppress sexual orientation or gender identity are against the law. These change or suppression practices are sometimes called ‘gay conversion’ practices or ‘conversion therapy’.

About these practices

Change or suppression (conversion) practices are considered extremely harmful. They are practices that intend to change or make someone hide their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

They are now prohibited as part of the Change or Suppression (Conversion) Practices Prohibition Act 2021, which came into effect on 17 February 2022.

It is now a crime to:

engage in such practice (or practices) directed towards another person where harm is caused
take another person from Victoria (or arrange to) with the intention these practices occur and harm is caused
publish, display or authorise advertisements or notices encouraging these practices.

Report a change or suppression (conversion) practice

Victoria Police takes all reports of these practices seriously by:

creating a safe and inclusive place to report
conducting criminal investigations
making referrals
sharing information with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC) (where appropriate and only with consent).

Book an appointment at your local station

If anyone is in danger, a crime is currently occurring, or you need immediate police attendance, please call Triple Zero (000).

If there is no immediate danger, we recommend contacting your local police station and making an appointment with a police officer to report.

This allows you to take your time talking to an officer in a safe and inclusive environment (in person or on the phone). The officer may also identify other crimes that have been committed against you during the interview.

LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officers (LLOs)

There are a number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer liaison officers (LGBTIQA+ Liaison Officers) in Victoria.

The LLOs provide a contact point for LGBTIQA+ community members. They also provide advice, assistance and recommendations on the policing needs of LGBTIQA+ people.
